    Sweet and Elite

Post  selfhelpguru on Sun Dec 04, 2011 8:54 pm

Man, Rarity episodes are always good episodes. Wait, I take that back; the Diamond Dogs episode sucked. Anyways, Sweet and Elite was great! All the high society ponies were hilarious (woohoo Fancy Pants, who was apparently supposed to be John Cleese). And there was another song! It was pop-ish and had a different feel to it than the previous songs. I liked it a lot.
However, the moral was a bit backwards: I thought it would be something about procrastination but then it turned out to be "be proud of your origins and your strange friends." Which is a good moral, but not the one I was expecting. It sort of seemed that Rarity got away with her procrastinating, which surprised me. Ah well. Fun episode anyways!

Wait-- you were surprised that she got away with it? Seriously, this is a show where the supposed "element of honesty" or whatever is a profligate liar (and so's everyone else), the "element of loyalty" is a pretentious prick, and they all get away with everything. And you think the moral is supposed to make sense? Seriously, they seemed to be running out of them by the end of Season 1!(I think)

But whatever, the song actually was great. I actually found "art of the dress" to be pretty grating, but I've only heard it once, so I might wind up liking it.

And I don't usually like Rarity episodes. The Diamond Dogs one was definitely the worst of the first season, mostly because it focused on Rarity being very annoying (though of course that was the fuel of the plot). And the Diamond Dogs were extremely irritating. Augh, their voices! ugh. XP

And Rarity is not best pony. She is too stereotypically feminine. But the two 2nd-season episodes about her have really added a depth to her character she hasn't had before, so I'm happy for that. In fact, I now actually like Rarity. She used to be the only one in the Mane Cast I actually didn't like, so that's good.

But Rainbow's still best pony. /)^3^(\

EDIT: Well anyway, disregard the above information. This episode rocked. (wow that feels cringingly stereotypical to say).

Vote for best episode yet? (of this season)

The dog episode doesn't suck in my opinion. I think it's okay. It had lots of Spike screen time, the obligatory Gollum parody, and Rarity being a bitch (which was okay in season one, anyway).

In this episode, I really liked the Zelda reference and the portrayal of Twilight's hideous dancing at the party. Great stuff. The song does feel very new, but I noticed great similarities with The Art of the Dress (another good song), not limited to the fact that they're both sung by Rarity.

Also, I don't think that the moral doesn't make sense or that there are any writing flaws in that vein from previous episodes. The characters in this show aren't perfectly good and nice, so there's always a little chaos that makes the characters feel natural. Rainbow Dash may betray her friends under the proper influence of healthy story conflict. That doesn't mean the show is making any factual errors; it just means that Rainbow isn't a Mary Sue.

Don't worry, I wasn't saying that the show's writing was flawed, at least with respect to the characters. I find it very interesting how they paired up some of the Elements with characters whose personalities in some ways go against them. It is a very clever way to set up instant internal conflict if each character is genuinely torn between opposing motives, especially in the case of Rarity, who at first glance would seem to be a self-centered poseur, but who really cares about her friends as much as the next guy. If this show's characters were just what they were "supposed" to be, then it would be no better than that sickening Strawberry Shortcake show.

But the morals are what I find problematic. In quite a few episodes, the moral seemed kind of pulled out of nowhere. With this episode, for example, it seemed to be building up to a moral about how one shouldn't put off one's responsibilities. But what it ultimately ended with, "Don't be ashamed of your friends or where you're from," wasn't even alluded to except for that "Rainbow is the Wonderbolts' trainer" line and maybe a few others. Maybe this is the writing staff's way of making a TWWEEST, and I applaud them if that's what they're doing, but it still seems a bit off regardless.

But on to more important matters: What's this Zelda reference you speak of?
And while we're at it, to quote someone on KYM:

    NOT BAD

The blimp is the Wind Fish. Thought it's kind of random that there would be a blimp shaped like a fish? Yeah, Zelda. Also, Rarity isn't at all a poseur. A poseur is somepony who essentially gives in to the mainstream regardless of her personality to be accepted. Rarity naturally loves fancy Canterlot stuff.
